Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN)
Airport Information

(Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam)

The gateway to southern Vietnam, Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is a popular airport, located around 6 km / 4 miles from central Ho Chi Minh City and directly south of Ap Lan Nhi and west of No Trang Long and Không Gia Dinh. Formerly known as Saigon Airport, this facility is lacking in most basic modern airport facilities, despite at one time having been the third-busiest airport in the entire world.

However, for tourists, business travellers and other visitors entering Vietnam, Tan Son Nhat Airport is the most convenient gateway to the country, despite its lack of amenities. Today, Vietnam's airport handles around 17 million passengers each year and some 65,000 air movements, and this figure is steadily rising.

Visitors arriving at Tan Son Nhat Airport have only a few options for travelling between the airport and Ho Chi Minh City. Local buses are cheap, but do tend to be a little irregular and unreliable. Minibuses, taxis and cyclos (motorcycle taxis) can be hired, with metered taxis being the most popular choice. Although there are no self-drive car rentals, you can hire a car and a driver for a negotiated period.

About Ho Chi Minh City Tourism

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the biggest city in the whole of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City has figured prominently in recent modern history as the capital of the ill-fated South Vietnam regime, backed by the USA during the Vietnam War of the 1960s and '70s. After a lacklustre period following the end of the war, the city is once again a bustling metropolis, full of exciting nightspots, great shopping, intriguing atmosphere and sumptuous cuisine.

Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) is near to many of Ho Chi Minh City's imposing war memorials, which offer a strong reminder of the past. Museums and historic sights are everywhere, including the famous tank that drove through the gates of the palace in the closing days of the Vietnam War. Other favourite attractions are the Cu Chi Tunnels, 46 miles / 74 km north of the city.
